The Psalms Review: Chapter 1

By Tarisai Peter Ziyambi

Psalm 1 pronounces a blessing upon those who choose not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly, stand in the way of sinners, or sit among the scornful. But what does this truly mean?

There is a well-known proverb: "A friend of my enemy is my enemy." History and experience have shown that the deepest betrayals often come not from strangers but from those closest to us. Consider the final scenes of Christ’s earthly ministry—His betrayal by a friend who sealed his treachery with a venomous kiss. "But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?" (Luke 22:48).

Similarly, Africa has suffered destabilization at the hands of modern imperialism, which often presents itself as a friend but is, in reality, a far more insidious foe. The python may change its colors, but its nature remains the same. In spiritual matters, this deceptive transformation is mirrored in the third phase of the dragon—a power that outwardly embraces Christianity yet, at its core, is the lamp-like beast spoken of in prophecy. It conceals its true nature until the appointed time, when it will unleash its flood in an attempt to sweep away the remnant of the genuine seed.

So, how do we avoid falling under the curse of deception? We must refuse to walk with the enemy. Vigilance is essential. We are called to put on the whole armor of God, for our battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers in high places (Ephesians 6:12). In short, we must discern the enemy and walk in the counsel of God, not in the ways of the ungodly.
