“The darkest
chapters of history are burdened with the record of crimes committed by bigoted
religionists…They thought themselves the greatest religionists of the world,
but their so-called orthodoxy led them to crucify the Lord of Glory” DA309,2.
ANY RELIGION OR
DOCTRINE HAS TO GO THROUGH ISAIAH 8:20 TEST
"To the law and to the testimony:
if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in
them. - Isaiah 8:20
THE LEGAL TEST
Matthew 22:36-40
"Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him,
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy
soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the
second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On
these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets".
Romans 3:20-21 "Therefore by the deeds of the
law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the
knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is
manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;"
“By the law is the
knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20); for “sin is the transgression of the law” (1
John 3:4). It is through the law that men are convicted of sin; and they must
feel themselves sinners, exposed to the wrath of God, before they will realize
their need of a Saviour. Satan is continually at work to lessen man’s estimate
of the grievous character of sin. And those who trample the law of God under
their feet are doing the work of the great deceiver; for they are rejecting the
only rule by which they can define sin, and bring it home to the conscience of
the transgressor. - 1SM 219.1
Ye are my friends,
if ye do whatsoever I command you. - John 15:14
If ye love me, keep
my commandments. - John 14:15
Our love to Christ
will be in proportion to the depth of our conviction of sin, and by the law is
the knowledge of sin. But as we see ourselves, let us look away to Jesus, who
gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all iniquity. By faith take
hold of the merits of Christ, and the soul-cleansing blood will be applied. The
more clearly we see the evils and perils to which we have been exposed, the
more grateful shall we be for deliverance through Christ. The gospel of
Christ does not give men license to break the law, for it was through
transgression that the floodgates of woe were opened upon our world. - FW 96.1
The condemning power of the law of God extends, not only to the things we do, but to the things we do not do.
We are not to justify ourselves in omitting to do the things that God requires.
We must not only cease to do evil, but
we must learn to do well. God has given us powers to be exercised in
good works; and if these powers are not put to use, we shall certainly be
set down as wicked and slothful servants. We may not have committed
grievous sins; such offenses may not stand registered against us in the book of
God; but the fact that our deeds are not recorded as pure, good, elevated, and
noble, showing that we have not improved our entrusted talents, places us under
condemnation. - 1SM 220.1
The Law of God reaches to those secret purposes,
which, though they may be sinful, are often passed over lightly, but which are
in reality the basis and the test of character. It is the mirror into which the
sinner is to look if he would have a correct knowledge of his moral character.
And when he sees himself condemned by that great standard of righteousness, his
next move must be to repent of his sins, and seek forgiveness through Christ.
Failing to do this, many try to break the mirror which reveals their defects,
to make void the law which points out the blemishes in their life and character.
- 1SM 219.2
The law was not spoken at this time exclusively for
the benefit of the Hebrews. God honored them by making them the guardians and
keepers of His law, but it was to be held as a sacred trust for the whole
world. The precepts of the Decalogue are adapted to all mankind, and they were
given for the instruction and government of all. Ten precepts, brief,
comprehensive, and authoritative, cover the duty of man to God and to his
fellow man; and all based upon the great fundamental principle of love. “Thou
shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with
all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.” Luke
10:27. See also Deuteronomy 6:4, 5; Leviticus 19:18. In the Ten Commandments
these principles are carried out in detail, and made applicable to the
condition and circumstances of man. PP 305.2
“Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.” PP 305.3
Jehovah, the eternal, self-existent, uncreated One,
Himself the Source and Sustainer of all, is alone entitled to supreme reverence
and worship. Man is forbidden to give to any other object the first place in
his affections or his service. Whatever we cherish that tends to lessen our
love for God or to interfere with the service due Him, of that do we make a
god. PP 305.4
The second commandment forbids the worship of the
true God by images or similitudes. Many heathen nations claimed that their
images were mere figures or symbols by which the Deity was worshiped, but God
has declared such worship to be sin. The attempt to represent the Eternal One
by material objects would lower man’s conception of God. The mind, turned away
from the infinite perfection of Jehovah, would be attracted to the creature
rather than to the Creator. And as his conceptions of God were lowered, so
would man become degraded. PP 306.1
“I the Lord thy God am a jealous God.” The close
and sacred relation of God to His people is represented under the figure of
marriage. Idolatry being spiritual adultery, the displeasure of God against it
is fitly called jealousy. PP 306.2
“Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me.” It is
inevitable that children should suffer from the consequences of parental
wrongdoing, but they are not punished for the parents’ guilt, except as they
participate in their sins. It is usually the case, however, that children walk
in the steps of their parents. By inheritance and example the sons become
partakers of the father’s sin. Wrong tendencies, perverted appetites, and
debased morals, as well as physical disease and degeneracy, are transmitted as
a legacy from father to son, to the third and fourth generation. This fearful
truth should have a solemn power to restrain men from following a course of
sin. PP 306.3
“Showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me,
and keep My commandments.” In prohibiting the worship of false gods, the second
commandment by implication enjoins the worship of the true God. And to those
who are faithful in His service, mercy is promised, not merely to the third and
fourth generation as is the wrath threatened against those who hate Him, but to
thousands of generations. PP 306.4
“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God
in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in
vain.” PP 306.5
This commandment not only prohibits false oaths and
common swearing, but it forbids us to use the name of God in a light or
careless manner, without regard to its awful significance. By the thoughtless
mention of God in common conversation, by appeals to Him in trivial matters,
and by the frequent and thoughtless repetition of His name, we dishonor Him.
“Holy and reverend is His name.” Psalm 111:9. All should meditate upon His
majesty, His purity and holiness, that the heart may be impressed with a sense
of His exalted character; and His holy name should be uttered with reverence
and solemnity. PP 306.6
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six
days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath
of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor
thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy
stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and
earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore
the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.” PP 307.1
The Sabbath is not introduced as a new institution
but as having been founded at creation. It is to be remembered and observed as
the memorial of the Creator’s work. Pointing to God as the Maker of the heavens
and the earth, it distinguishes the true God from all false gods. All who keep
the seventh day signify by this act that they are worshipers of Jehovah. Thus the
Sabbath is the sign of man’s allegiance to God as long as there are any upon
the earth to serve Him. The fourth commandment is the only one of all the ten
in which are found both the name and the title of the Lawgiver. It is the only
one that shows by whose authority the law is given. Thus it contains the seal
of God, affixed to His law as evidence of its authenticity and binding force.
PP 307.2
God has given men six days wherein to labor, and He
requires that their own work be done in the six working days. Acts of necessity
and mercy are permitted on the Sabbath, the sick and suffering are at all times
to be cared for; but unnecessary labor is to be strictly avoided. “Turn away
thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on My holy day; and call the
Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honorable; and ... honor Him, not
doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure.” Isaiah 58:13. Nor does
the prohibition end here. “Nor speaking thine own words,” says the prophet.
Those who discuss business matters or lay plans on the Sabbath are regarded by
God as though engaged in the actual transaction of business. To keep the
Sabbath holy, we should not even allow our minds to dwell upon things of a
worldly character. And the commandment includes all within our gates. The
inmates of the house are to lay aside their worldly business during the sacred
hours. All should unite to honor God by willing service upon His holy day. PP
307.3
The Testimony Test
“The
Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.
The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: He
shall preserve thy soul.” “He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the
noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His
wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for
the terror by night;
nor for the arrow that flieth
by day; nor for the pestilence
that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at
noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand;
but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see
the reward of the wicked. Because
thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy
habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh
thy dwelling.”Psalm
121:5-7; 91:3-10.
Then Peter and the other apostles answered and
said, We ought to obey God rather than men. - Acts 5:29
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of
your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in
the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he
speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. - John 8:44
And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall
he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be
strong, and do exploits. - Daniel 11:32
This compromise
between paganism and Christianity resulted in the development of the “man of
sin” foretold in prophecy as opposing and exalting himself above God. That
gigantic system of false religion is a masterpiece of Satan’s power,—a monument
of his efforts to seat himself upon the throne to rule the earth according to
his will. - GC88 50.1
Satan once
endeavored to form a compromise with Christ. He came to the Son of God in the
wilderness of temptation, and, showing him all the kingdoms of the world and
the glory of them, offered to give all into his hands if he would but
acknowledge the supremacy of the prince of darkness. Christ rebuked the
presumptuous tempter, and forced him to depart. But Satan meets with greater
success in presenting the same temptations to man. To secure worldly gains and
honors, the church was led to seek the favor and support of the great men of
earth, and having thus rejected Christ, she was induced to yield allegiance to
the representative of Satan,—the bishop of Rome. - GC88 50.2
It is one of the leading doctrines of
Romanism that the pope is the visible head of the universal church of Christ,
invested with supreme authority over bishops and pastors in all parts of the
world. More than this, the pope has arrogated the very titles of Deity. He
styles himself “Lord God the Pope,” assumes infallibility, and demands that all
men pay him homage. Thus the same claim urged by Satan in the wilderness of
temptation is still urged by him through the Church of Rome, and vast numbers
are ready to yield him homage. - GC88 50.3
But those who fear and reverence God meet this
Heaven-daring assumption as Christ met the solicitations of the wily foe: “Thou
shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” [Luke 4:8.] God
has never given a hint in his Word that he has appointed any man to be the head
of the church. The doctrine of papal supremacy is directly opposed to the
teachings of the Scriptures. The pope can have no power over Christ’s church
except by usurpation. - GC88 51.1
“When the Scriptures are suppressed, and man comes to regard himself as supreme, we need look only for fraud, deception, and debasing iniquity. With the elevation of human laws and traditions, was manifest the corruption that ever results from setting aside the law of God”. - GC88 55.1
God calls upon us to
show a hallowed patriotism, to reveal the attributes of the Saviour in the home
and in the church, to deny self that we may have to give to the work in the
fields afar off. Let all seek to manifest the benevolence of Christ. He gave
His life to save a fallen world, and shall Christians, those who claim to be
His representatives on the earth, be unwilling to deny self? Shall they remain
weak and inefficient because they are too selfish to make sacrifices for Him
who gave His life as a sacrifice for them? - ST August 21, 1901
"There can be
no question but that the Declaration of Independence was the beginning of this
nation. And the first principle embodied in that immortal declaration is
that “all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain
inalienable rights.” The first and
greatest of all the rights of men is religious right. And “religion” is “the duty
which we owe to our Creator, and the manner of discharging it.” The first of
all duties is to the Creator, because to him we owe our existence. Therefore
the first of all commandments, and the first that there can possibly be, is
this: “Hear, 0 Israel, The Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the
Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind,
and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” Mark 12 : 29,
30" AT Jones "What is Patriotism in the United States".
The first point in this inquiry is, What is
patriotism in any country? What is patriotism in itself? Patriotism is usually
defined, in brief; as love of country; but love of country is more than
the love of the mountains and hills, the plains, valleys, rivers, and
rills, of which the country is composed. More fully defined, patriotism
is the spirit which prompts obedience to the laws of one’s country,
and to the support and defense of its existence, rights, and institutions.
Thus, love of country is really love of the institutions and the principles
which make a country what it is in all respects. If love of country were simply
love of the mountains and hills, valleys and plains, rivers and
rills, the landscape,of which the country is composed, there could never be any
such thing as civil war; for plainly there could never be any dispute over
that, among people inhabiting the same territory. It is evident, therefore,
that patriotism in truth lies in love of the principles and institutions which
make a country what it is in all respects it is loyalty to those specific
principles and institutions. Hence, the patriot is correctly defined as “any
defender of liberty, civil or religious.” A.T Jones [What is Patriotism in the
United States].
One of the topics rarely discussed in polite
society is the Roman Church-State's role in supporting the fascist and Nazi
regimes of the twentieth century. That support is not accidental, but flows
from the social teaching and ecclesiastical structure of the Roman
Church-State. Christopher Dawson, a Roman Catholic historian, wrote that Roman
Catholicism: Is by no means hostile to the authoritarian ideal State. Against
the liberal doctrines of the divine right of majorities and the unrestrained
freedom of the opinion the [Roman] Church has always maintained the principles
of authority and hierarchy and a high conception of the prerogatives of the
State. [Roman Catholic social ideas] have far more affinity with those of
fascism than with those of either Liberalism or Socialism. [They] correspond
much more closely, at least in theory, with the Fascist conception of the
functions of the "leader" and the vocational hierarchy of the Fascist
state than they do with the system of parliamentary democratic party
government..." John W . Robbins [ Ecclesiastical Megalomania Pg 161].
Those who endeavor to obey all the commandments of God
will be opposed and derided. They can stand only in God. In order to endure the
trial before them, they must understand the will of God as revealed in his
Word; they can honor him only as they have a right conception of his character,
government, and purposes, and act in accordance with them. None but those who
have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible will stand through the
last great conflict. To every soul will come the searching test, Shall I obey
God rather than men? The decisive hour is even now at hand. Are our feet
planted on the rock of God’s immutable Word? Are we prepared to stand firm in
defense of the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus? - GC88 593.2
The plain
of dura
The appointed day came, and a vast concourse from
all “people, nations, and languages,” assembled on the plain of Dura. In
harmony with the king’s command, when the sound of music was heard, the whole
company “fell down and worshipped the golden image.” On that eventful day the
powers of darkness seemed to be gaining a signal triumph; the worship of the
golden image bade fair to become connected permanently with the established
forms of idolatry recognized as the state religion of the land. Satan hoped
thereby to defeat God’s purpose of making the presence of captive Israel in
Babylon a means of blessing to all the nations of heathendom. - PK 506.1
But God decreed otherwise. Not all had bowed the
knee to the idolatrous symbol of human power. In the midst of the worshipping
multitude there were three men who were firmly resolved not thus to dishonor
the God of heaven. Their God was King of kings and Lord of lords; they would
bow to none other. - PK 506.2
To Nebuchadnezzar, flushed with triumph, was
brought the word that among his subjects there were some who dared disobey his
mandate. Certain of the wise men, jealous of the honors that had been bestowed
upon the faithful companions of Daniel, now reported to the king their flagrant
violation of his wishes. “O king, live forever,” they exclaimed. “There are certain
Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve
not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” - PK 506.3
The king commanded that the men be brought before
him. “Is it true,” he inquired, “do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the
golden image which I have set up?” He endeavored by threats to induce them to
unite with the multitude. Pointing to the fiery furnace, he reminded them of
the punishment awaiting them if they should persist in their refusal to obey
his will. But firmly the Hebrews testified to their allegiance to the God of
heaven, and their faith in His power to deliver. The act of bowing to the image
was understood by all to be an act of worship. Such homage they could render to
God alone. - PK 507.1
In vain were the king’s threats. He could not turn
the men from their allegiance to the Ruler of the universe. From the history of
their fathers they had learned that disobedience to God results in dishonor,
disaster, and death; and that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
the foundation of all true prosperity. Calmly facing the furnace, they said, “O
Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so
[if this is your decision], our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from
the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.”
Their faith strengthened as they declared that God would be glorified by delivering
them, and with triumphant assurance born of implicit trust in God, they added,
“But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods,
nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” - PK 507.3
The king’s wrath knew no bounds. “Full of fury,”
“the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,”
representatives of a despised and captive race. Directing that the furnace be
heated seven times hotter than its wont, he commanded the mighty men of his
army to bind the worshipers of Israel’s God, preparatory to summary execution.
PK 508.1
Important
are the lessons to be learned from the experience of the Hebrew youth on the
plain of Dura. In this our day, many of God’s servants, though
innocent of wrongdoing, will be given over to suffer humiliation and abuse at the hands of those who, inspired by
Satan, are filled with envy and religious bigotry. Especially
will the wrath of man be aroused against
those who hallow the Sabbath of the fourth commandment; and at last a universal
decree will denounce these as deserving of death.
The season of distress
before God’s people will call for a
faith that will not falter. His children must make it manifest that He is the
only object of their worship, and that no consideration, not even that of life
itself, can induce them to make the least concession to false worship. To
the loyal heart the commands of sinful, finite men will sink into
insignificance beside the word of the eternal God. Truth will be obeyed though
the result be imprisonment or exile or death. - PK 512.2
The same danger still exists. Many take it for
granted that they are Christians, simply because they subscribe to certain
theological tenets. But they have not brought the truth into practical life. They
have not believed and loved it, therefore they have not received the power and
grace that come through sanctification of the truth. Men may profess faith in
the truth; but if it does not make them sincere,
kind, patient, forbearing, heavenly-minded, it is a curse to its possessors,
and through their influence it is a curse to the world. - DA 309.3
Conclusion
Does God
Forget His People in Dark Days?
Will the Lord forget His people in this trying hour? Did He forget
faithful Noah when judgments were visited upon the antediluvian world? Did He
forget Lot when the fire came down from heaven to consume the cities of the
plain? Did He forget Joseph surrounded by idolaters in Egypt? Did He forget
Elijah when the oath of Jezebel threatened him with the fate of the prophets of
Baal? Did He forget Jeremiah in the dark and dismal pit of his prison house?
Did He forget the three worthies in the fiery furnace? or Daniel in the den of
lions? GC
626.2
“Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my
Lord hath forgotten me. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should
not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I
not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands.” Isaiah 49:14-16. The
Lord of hosts has said: “He that toucheth you toucheth the apple of His
eye.” Zechariah 2:8. GC 626.3
Though enemies may thrust them into prison,
yet dungeon walls cannot cut off the communication between their souls and
Christ. One who sees their every weakness, who is acquainted with every trial,
is above all earthly powers; and angels will come to them in lonely cells,
bringing light and peace from heaven. The prison will be as a palace; for the
rich in faith dwell there, and the gloomy walls will be lighted up with
heavenly light as when Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises at midnight in
the Philippian dungeon.
